I'm not using household income, whatever. So Let's just go with the average house in the cheapest state in the United States, Mississippi. The average Mississippi home goes for $180,000, making your 15-year monthly mortgage payment around $1,600. Again, assuming perfect credit, no utilities, insurance, or maintenance. That puts your take-home pay at $6,400 per month or an annual salary of $95,000. Even if you're in the median household income of $80,000 per year, you would not be able to afford to live in the median household income of $80,000 per year, you would not be able to afford to live in the cheapest state in the country if you follow Dave Ramsey's advice for buying a home.
